SC Collegium Recommends Justice Rakesh Kumar's Name for Supreme Court Judgeship

First Recommendation under CJI Chandrachud's Tenure

New Delhi:

In its first recommendation under Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud's tenure, the Supreme Court collegium has recommended Justice Rakesh Kumar's name for elevation to the top court. Currently, Justice Kumar is serving as the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.

The collegium headed by CJI Chandrachud considered the proposal in its meeting held on Wednesday. The other members of the collegium include Justices S.K. Kaul, K.M. Joseph, M.R. Shah, and Ajay Rastogi.

The recommendation is now expected to be sent to the Ministry of Law and Justice for further processing. The government will then forward the recommendation to President Droupadi Murmu for her approval.

Justice Kumar's elevation will fill one of the two vacancies in the Supreme Court created by the recent retirements of Justices V. Ramasubramanian and B.R. Gavai.

The Supreme Court collegium is responsible for recommending appointments and transfers of judges to the Supreme Court and high courts in India. Its recommendations are generally accepted by the government.
